About

Welcome to the updated blog site of the History Department at the University of Manchester! We are home to one of the largest departments in Britain, with over 30 world-leading historians specialising in a fantastically-wide array of periods, subjects and places: encompassing the Vikings and Medieval Crusades, to cultures of magic and spirituality in early-modern Europe, to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s dealings with Latin America and the abdication crisis of King Edward VIII, to histories of warfare, feminism, fatherhood, humanitarianism and conflict, modern China, East Asia, and many more…

If you would like to learn more about our lecturers and their research expertise, as well as opportunities to come and study with us, please see our website here. In the meantime, this blog should serve to give you a flavour of the vibrant and exciting day-to-day activities of both staff and students, as well as our important work using history to engage with our local community, museums, and educational and charitable partners.

So why not have a browse? The navigation pane on the right-hand side of the page should offer you a place to start, highlighting a selection of our most recent posts at the top. Or, you could read through by category — check out the latest news from one of our research networks (Modern British History, World History, Medieval History, and Early Modern History) and groups (Political Cultures, Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute). For background and clarification on our groups and networks, see here. To dip into student experiences from our department, select ‘Student Life’ to read about study abroad opportunities, postgraduate research, undergraduate workshops and awards; or you could use the link at the top of the page to visit the site of The Manchester Historian, the award-winning magazine written and edited entirely by our history students themselves. You can also follow us on twitter @UoMhistdept — get minute-by-minute updates from our live twitter feed beneath the ‘Categories’ pane.

We aim to keep the blog site as full of fresh and topical insights from the world of History@Manchester as possible, and hope that our readers will get a sense of our passion for and enjoyment of teaching, researching, studying and writing about history.

Have fun!
