LGBT History Month 2012

Editors Note: This is an archived blog post from 7/2/2012

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans (LGBT) History Month takes place every year in February. It provides an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the lives and achievements of the LGBT Community past and present. 2012 sees LGBT History Month focus on sport in this Olympic year. Many high profile athletes still find it difficult to ‘come out’ through fear of exclusion and bullying. Numerous sports stars still encounter homophobia in their day to day activities and feel there is too much risk to their careers to come out. But there are shining examples of sports stars who have taken that brave step and spoken about their sexuality. Although there is still a way to go in many sports, there are numerous organisations working to achieve equality in sport.

A full timetable of activities will be taking place throughout February.  Everyone is encouraged to attend – even if you think the subject does not directly affect you, it may be important to family, friends, relatives and colleagues.  A full timetable can be found here.

The LGBT History Month is organised by the University’s LGBT Staff Network Group.
