Current Research: Chris Godden

Our colleague Dr. Chris Godden has been doing some research on the life and work of Mark Hovell, a student at Manchester before the First World War, whose promising career as an historian was cut short by the conflict. Chris has recently found a set of Hovell’s papers and we look forward to hearing more from him in due course.

In the meantime, this website reproduces a moving biography of Hovell written by the great Manchester historian Thomas F. Tout, his tutor and friend, who made good his promise of completing Hovell’s book on Chartism if he did not return from the War. This book, The Chartist Movement (Manchester University Press 1918), can be read in the Rylands main library or Deansgate.

The Hovell papers can be consulted at the University Records and Archive Centre at the John Rylands.
